High-speed chase ends in shooting near downtown Phoenix, suspect dead: DPS

Posted

A high-speed chase that began on Interstate 10 and continued through parts of Phoenix ended after a 56-year-old suspect left his vehicle and brandished a firearm before being shot, authorities said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital about 30 minutes after the  chase began.

At about 4:25 p.m. July 4  a trooper attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle for speeding on westbound I-10 near 40th Street. He did not stop, officials said, and accelerated to speeds of more than 110 mph.

Other troopers joined the pursuit, and the driver left the interstate at 24th Street, traveled the wrong way on surface streets before driving through Sky Harbor Circle where troopers attempted a maneuver to slow down and stop the vehicle, according to a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

But the suspect reentered I-10 westbound, then exited at the Washington/Jefferson Street off-ramp, traveled east on Jefferson and then north on 22nd Street, according to DPS.

“The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran southwest towards Jefferson Street and a foot pursuit ensued. During the foot pursuit, the suspect produced a firearm and a trooper-involved shooting occurred,” the release stated.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:57 p.m., officials said.

Troopers said they later learned, the suspect vehicle was stolen and had a fictitious license plate.
