Downtown Tempe sees revival, but not without some struggles

51 businesses closed, while 80 opened in past 2 years

Though Downtown Tempe saw a record number of businesses close amid the worst points of the COVID-19 pandemic, the busiest part of the city is now seeing a revitalization.

According to data gathered by the Downtown Tempe Authority, approximately 51 businesses closed between March 2020 and March 2022. But in that same time period, over 80 new businesses opened.

Lori Foster, the chief strategy officer for DTA, said turnover is a typical issue for downtown businesses, regardless of a global pandemic.
