Downtown Glendale construction will pause annual Summer Band series

Director worries about band’s future after 57 years

May is typically the time the Glendale Summer Band starts doin’ its thing.

The 100-member strong volunteer concert band debuted in 1966, and among its signature annual offerings is the five-week free concert series at the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheatre in Murphy Park in downtown Glendale every Thursday night in June.

The band goes back so far it even pre-dates the amphitheatre named in honor of its founding director. Until the downtown facility was built for the band, they played at O’Neil Park, which was built in 1961.
