Documents reveal communications between local leaders and Southwest Gas amid rate hike

Recently released public records shed light on behind-the-scenes correspondence between natural gas service provider Southwest Gas and several Valley leaders, including the mayor of Goodyear, amid the utility’s successful bid to increase its rates.

In January, nine Arizona mayors of high-growth cities signed their names to a letter denouncing what it called “anti-growth” policies supported by the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) that call for greater disclosures regarding Southwest Gas’ planned investments.

But the letter wasn’t written by the local leaders or their staff, but by Southwest Gas itself, as first reported in the Arizona Mirror Jan. 31 and confirmed by the Independent.
