Discussions on joint Glendale Police, Luke AFB indoor shooting range to resume late in year

The next round of discussions about a joint-use indoor shooting range for Glendale Police and Luke Air Force Base will be some time this year, but not until 2025 is winding down.

City Manager Kevin Phelps said following the June 10 council meeting that there is no firm timeline for council to discuss a more specific proposal on this small arms range. Based on his experience, Phelps said it could take three to six more months to get the proposal's basic framework in place.

During the May 13 workshop, council reached a consensus to allow the city's Engineering Department to conduct a feasibility study on the proposal and its likely site. However, council members Lauren Tolmachoff and Bart Turner indicated the proposal would need to clear a high bar for their approval, as it inevitably will pull away money from one or more projects already in Glendale’s public safety capital improvement plan.
