Diamondbacks' stadium funding bill an improved deal for Phoenix, council members say

Members of Phoenix City Council last week commended the compromises made on the city’s share of tax funds in the state bill to pay for renovations to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ stadium.

Gov. Katie Hobbs signed the bill into law in September that will raise up to $500 million for renovations to Chase Field during the next 30 years. As part of the agreement, the team also must contribute $250 million toward renovations.

The state law obligates Phoenix to contribute its 2% portion of tax for sales at the stadium or other nearby structures owned by the team or Maricopa County Stadium District — which include a parking garage and a restaurant/sportsbook — toward a fund that will pay for stadium improvements.
