Dia de Los Muertos celebration returns to Florence

Posted

The Third Annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration will honor one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexican culture.

The Pinal County Historical Museum, in collaboration with event producer Five20 Events, is hosting the celebration from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21 at Padilla Park, 420 N. Quartz St.

Padilla Park will be filled with the sound of live music courtesy of Mariachi Nueva Era, Guitarra Latina, and the RJ Band, according to a press release. The colorful choreography of Ballet Folklorico Del Sol and Los Pequenos de Florence will showcase traditional Mexican folk dances. Family friendly activities will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. and live music will continue into the evening, the release stated.

“Dia de Los Muertos, a timeless and cherished occasion, finds its roots entwined in history dating back 3,000 years to the Olmecs,” the release stated. “Throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Southwest, this celebration honors ancestors with heartfelt prayers, food offerings, and the construction of intricate altars known as ofrendas. Every region lends its unique brushstrokes to this sacred canvas, and in Arizona, Dia de Los Muertos is a vibrant celebration of life itself.”

Appearing once again at the event is Zarco Guerrero, whose stories will show the significance of Dia de Los Muertos “bridging the gap between generations and cultures.”

“This celebration is designed to bring families together in a playful atmosphere. Children can take part in a variety of activities, including face painting and arts and crafts, providing an opportunity for them to engage with the cultural essence of Dia de Los Muertos,” the release stated. “Savor the flavors of the event with a tempting selection of food trucks, vendors and a beer garden, offering a taste of local tradition.”

The event is free courtesy of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and a variety of event sponsors.
