Details emerge regarding ‘high risk’ water well in Peoria

City will seek to change status

More details have emerged about a water well near 83rd and Grand avenues labeled as “high risk” since 2005 by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

For a number of years, the Stone Well was listed as “high risk” in the city’s water consumer confidence report with the disclaimer that the designation does not mean the source is or will become contaminated, but that at the time of the assessment, conditions existed that made it susceptible to possible future contamination.

The “high risk” label stems from a nearby gas station with a historic reportable release or spill. The gas station, Mobil 18-MX6, which has long since been razed, had five underground storage tanks that were permanently closed and removed between 1987 and 2003.
