Despite improved light rail safety numbers, Phoenix council member still sees some troubling stats

Valley Metro told a Phoenix City Council subcommittee this week the rate of security incidents on light rail have markedly improved after it more than doubled security staff since mid-2024.

However, one council member remained concerned about the number of people riding without paying a fare as well as those who have been received citations during periods of increased police presence.

After Valley Metro issued a pay increase for security guards at its contracted security firm, Allied Universal, in July 2024, staffing vacancy rates dropped from 48.8% in June to 7.4% in December.
