Defense falters as Rattlers drop shootout to Freight

The Arizona Rattlers (1-1) defense didn’t come to play in a 63-42 loss against the Fishers Freight (2-1) Sunday night.

The Freight got off to a quick start on a Josiah King rushing touchdown. King would go on to score three touchdowns in the romping. The Rattlers tried to keep it close but Fishers answered to each Arizona score, including a deuce for a two-point score.

Neither team’s defense played well in the first quarter, as the Freight led 23-14 following the frame. The trend continued for the Rattlers as they allowed 19 more points in the second frame to give Fishers a commanding 42-21 lead at the half.

The second quarter woes included an interception thrown by Rattlers QB Max Meylor and a turnover on downs deep in Fishers’ territory.

Meylor tried to keep his team in it in the third quarter. Late in the frame, the quarterback scrambled to his right and leapt into the endzone to make it a two-possession game. However, the effort came too late as the lead was already too much to overcome.

The Freight applied constant pressure in the second half, which disrupted Arizona's rhythm and big-play opportunities. Meylor often found himself out of the pocket, preventing the Rattlers from mounting a sustained comeback attempt.

Meylor finished 17-for-25  for 198 yards, 4 passing TDs and an interception. He added 22 more yards on the ground and a score.

The Rattlers return home to Glendale next week for a 6 p.m. home game on Saturday, April 11, against the San Antonio Gunslingers.
