Deer Valley Unified pioneering change in new grading scales

First phase already rolled out as district attempts to be an Arizona ‘trend-setter’

Deer Valley Unified School District is joining districts across the country in changing its grading scales for students, and it may be the first in Arizona to do so.

New grade scales are being phased in during the next two years in DVUSD with the Phase 1 schools starting in the current academic year.

Instead of assigning a letter grade, the grading scale will reflect a level of learning proficiency so there is more consistency throughout the district, DVUSD states. The most obvious change comes in the switch from A through F letter grades to a 4 through 1 scale for kindergarten through sixth grades, and 4 through 0 scale for seventh through 12th grades.
