Deer Valley Unified faces $32M shortfall if lawmakers fail to act

Legislature reconvenes in January, has March 1 deadline

Public schools across the state will open the new year waiting to see if the legislature will act to prevent major cuts to education budgets, including those in Deer Valley Unified School District.

Without that action from state lawmakers, Arizona schools will have to reduce their spending this academic year by a cumulative total of more than $1.2 billion. That translates to a cut of $32.3 million for DVUSD.

The legislature will reconvene in January to take up the vote to approve an exemption from the voter-approved aggregate expenditure limit, which currently stands at about $6.6 billion. But that would take a two-thirds vote.
