Deer Valley Unified AzMERIT scores falter amid pandemic

ESSER-funded summer programs started in 2021, will continue through 2024 to raise scores

While Deer Valley Unified School District followed the state’s trends this year with lower AzMERIT test scores, remediation efforts that started this past summer and showed progress will continue through 2024.

Arizona schools overall saw a 4% drop in English scores on the state-mandated tests and an 11% decrease in math scores overall in the 2021 results compared with the 2019 results for the AzM2, the successor to AzMERIT, that is designed to measure students’ knowledge in the areas of English language arts and mathematics.

Tests were not administered in 2020 as the pandemic closed schools right before testing was to begin.
