MESA - Deer Valley boys volleyball finished its dominant playoff run determined to not lose a set, even against a team it had never beat.
Entering Saturday's 4A state final at Skyline High School in Mesa, top seed Northwest Christian had seven straight wins against the Skyhawks. The last victory, however, was won 15-13 in the fifth set at Deer Valley April 26.
The state final pivoted on another close set, and #2 Deer Valley (30-11-1) fought of two set points to win that opening set. From there the Skyhawks were in control and swept #1 Northwest Christian (29-3) 27-25, 25-15, 25-21 to win their first state title since 2010.
