Deadly fungal infection has 17 Arizona cases

A deadly fungus resistant to several medications has been spreading since the pandemic, according to data published this week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fungus, called Candida auris, is described by the CDC as non threatening to healthy people, but can be life threatening to those who are very sick, have invasive medical devices, or have long or frequent stays in health care facilities.

“Health care facilities in several countries have reported that a type of yeast called Candida auris has been causing severe illness in hospitalized patients. In some patients, this yeast can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body, causing serious invasive infections,” according to a statement from the CDC.
