‘Day of Action’ seeking volunteers for Valleywide projects

Community project opportunities for individuals, families

Valley of the Sun United Way, a nonprofit serving Maricopa County, will host its annual Day of Action this weekend.

Day of Action is a Valleywide volunteer opportunity for individuals, families, neighbors, co-workers and more to get involved and give back to create a stronger community. Kick-off celebrations begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 and service projects will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There are 15 different projects to support nonprofits and schools in various locations across Maricopa County including Buckeye, Mesa, Glendale, Apache Junction, Phoenix, and Scottsdale.

Event projects range from local school beautification projects, tending community gardens, packing food boxes, assembling education and health kits, sorting at clothing banks and more.

“Day of Action is an amazing chance for all of us as neighbors to come together and have a positive impact with and for our local community,” Twyla Marcrum, Valley of the Sun United Way vice president of donor engagement. “Whether you choose to volunteer with a nonprofit or at a school, work to reorganize an ‘Emergency Santa Workshop’ or help clean up a community garden, the gift of time is one of the most meaningful contributions one can make to support their community.”

Last year, more than 300 volunteers participated in Day of Action and completed 19 projects across the Valley. Volunteers helped with clean-up in two community gardens, assembled 1,000 School Readiness Kits to help children succeed in the classroom, built 500 Heat Relief Kits to support homelessness initiatives and much more.
