Sophie Cunningham came off the bench to knock down five second half 3-pointers and lift the Mercury over the New York Liberty 83-82 in a back-and-forth single-elimination first-round playoff game at Grand Canyon University Thursday.
Cunningham stepped up to fill the role of the most decorated 3-point shooter in league history, Diana Taurasi, who missed the game with an ankle injury after being a game-time decision Thursday.
“It was Sophie’s night tonight, and we needed every (one) of 21 points she gave us,” said Mercury Coach Sandy Brondello after the game. It was a career high in points for Cunningham.
