Annual Paradise Valley celebration recognizes legacy of MLK

A businessman approaches a young, pregnant woman with a child in tow handing out fliers at the precipice of the Sí, se Puede movement made famous by civil rights leader Caesar Chavez in the early 1970s.

He informs the young woman she “ought to be home taking care and raising those children of hers,” to which the woman replies, “That is exactly what I am doing. I am working for a better society for all.”

The year was 1972, the place was New York City and the woman is Paula G. Cullison, who was honored Monday, Jan. 17, at Town Hall, 6401 E. Lincoln Drive, bestowed the 2022 Diversity Champion Award on behalf of the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’i of Paradise Valley.
