Crimes of opportunity occur in Sun City West

Unoccupied homes targeted

Comparing crime stats in the Sun Cities over the past year, the numbers are higher in Sun City versus Sun City West.

Michael Redman, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office community outreach officer, said land mass and population both play a role in the numbers. He said Sun City is about 12-square miles with about 46,000 homes and is almost double the size of Sun City West. Redman said deputies have been combating issues at the Agua Fria River bottom for several years.

“The top crime in Sun City West is theft. So that means leaving a bike outside, cars unlocked or a package removed from a porch,” he said.
