Creighton University takes Phoenix by storm

Aims to fill Arizona health care workforce shortage

It all started with a cold call.

In the early 2000s, former St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center president and CEO Linda Hunt knew the Valley was in need of additional medical professionals to fill the needs of the growing Phoenix metro. Coming from a Catholic Institution, Hunt called the nearest Catholic university with a medical school — Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

By 2005, some of Creighton’s third-year medical students began rotations at St. Joseph’s, according to Tim Bricker, interim president for the Dignity Health Southwest Division, which operates St. Joseph’s.
