A driver was injured Wednesday morning after his truck hit a block wall and power line pole in Mesa, fire officials said.
Mesa Fire and Medical and Tempe Fire Department crews responded to the crash of a City of Mesa truck at about 9 a.m. June 28 near Alma School and Guadalupe roads, authorities said.
The truck, which was hauling a commercial-sized lawnmower on a flatbed trailer, “had come to rest partially through a residential block wall and on top of, as well as underneath, live power lines,” Mesa fire officials said.
The lawnmower moved forward and was resting upside down on the truck, leaking gasoline. There was a “small vehicle fire,” officials said.
The driver of the truck was removed from the vehicle and taken to a hospital in stable but critical condition, according to a release.
“There was initially difficulty extinguishing the vehicle fire due to the live electrical lines,” fire officials said.
“Crews held the fire in check using dry chemical fire extinguishers” until SRP arrived to secure power, after which the fire was extinguished, police said.
Salt River Project crews were working on the power outage throughout the day and expected to have power restored to 135 customers by 7 p.m. June 28.
