Crackdown on street racing in Phoenix is effective in first year

Law enforcement working to avoid displacing problem to other parts of Valley

A crackdown on street racing in Phoenix has been largely successful, according to Phoenix police. Now, part of the challenge will be to ensure street racers aren’t simply moving their dangerous activities to parts of the Valley with less policing.

Derek Elmore, commander of Phoenix police’s Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct, which hosts the city’s Street Racing Task Force, said the hotspots of street racing had been in the southwest and northeast of Phoenix. However, because of the task force’s crackdown, now much of that activity is being displaced to other parts of the Valley.

“Because of their success, a lot of it is going to other parts of the Valley, which is why we are continuing to work with the rest of the Valley on their issues and problems as well,” Elmore said during last week's Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee meeting.
