As local college and high school teams hope to start their winter sports schedule, Surprise has set 50 people as the threshold at which city approval is required for organized indoor and outdoor public events.
The city’s policy is in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order Executive Order 2020-59, which states: ‘Organized public events of more than 50 people are prohibited unless the city, town or county in unincorporated areas has determined that adequate safety precautions which are consistent with the guidance issued by both the CDC and ADHS for mitigating the spread of COVID-19 are documented as part of the request.”
Event organizers must apply for a waiver if more than 50 people are expected. One of the most likely organizations to apply — Ottawa University-Arizona — would not have to drive to City Hall to drop off the papers.
