County flood control projects designed to protect area

Two county agencies working to hold back the floodwaters when it rains and pours have several projects in the works in Apache Junction, including two that stretch south along the Central Arizona Project canal.

The projects range from a 110-square-mile swath to one for rehabilitation or replacement of three flood-retarding structures that protect 72 square miles of homes, businesses and farmland in Maricopa and Pinal counties. And there are plans for drainage work at Dirtwater Springs/Main Street, and design and construction of a Houston Avenue channel and a Camino Alto detention basin.

At the municipality level, the city of Apache Junction has three projects that in addition to roadwork are adding storm drains.
