County Board of Supervisors approves court renovations, remodel

Posted

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors earlier this month approved two contracts for the remodel of the Central Courts 11th floor and renovations of the Maricopa County Downtown Court Plaza.

The Central Courts 11th floor remodel will be contracted by AW Contracting Corp. for $5.6 million, with a completion deadline of no more then 300 days from start of construction.

The remodel will consist of partitions, finishes, duct work, plumbing and electrical fixtures.

AW Contracting Corp. has been serving the state since 1975. Their work consists of remodels for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tempe, commercial building of the Springerville airport and the Wright House Reception Center.

This project is on the 11th floor of the existing Maricopa County Superior Court Central Court Tower, 201 West Jefferson street, Phoenix. The existing floor plan is more than 19,000 square feet.

The renovation work includes four criminal courtrooms, jury deliberation rooms, judicial suites and judges chambers. The new design will include restrooms, evidence storage, interview and victim viewing rooms.
This contract was approved by the supervisors.

The second contract proposed was for the Downtown Court Plaza renovations with BWS Architects for a professional design service with a budget that cannot exceed $1.26 million.

The full design services include architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, landscape and civil disciplines.

The project’s scope will include improvements of the surrounding right-of-way spaces and county property along the First and Third avenues and Madison and Jefferson streets.

Additionally they will include geotechnical and site survey and off-site civil engineering related to the light rail, structural special inspections, security and access controls, and coordination of infrastructure for any owner provided audio visual and telecommunication services.

BWS is a design firm that has created design plans for schools, government, health care and commercial spaces for the state.

The estimated completion date is 477 days from the notice to proceed.

According to the agreement, this is just the first phase for the North Plaza, which consist of programming and site research.

Phase I is the demolition of the north plaza for a remodel. Phase II is the demolition of the First Avenue Jail, and tunnel reconstruction. Phase III is the renovation of the elevated corridor (Sky Bridge) connecting the existing East and West court towers.

The estimated construction cost for the whole projects is $14.4 million

The board unanimously passed the agenda item.
