Councilman: Phoenix must do more to clean up abandoned shopping carts

Phoenix City Councilman Jim Waring said the city needs to do a better job collecting abandoned shopping carts as council last week unanimously approved a new contract for its long-time cart collecting company.

Waring said he contacts Neighborhood Services staff multiple times a week about every abandoned cart he sees driving around the city. The city’s cart collection vendor, Arizona Cart Services, is supposed to collect a cart within two days of being notified about it, but Waring says that is not happening in many cases.

Neighborhood Services Director Spencer Self said his staff conducts some validation checks to confirm carts have been removed, but not for every cart.
