City Council is scheduled to hear a proposal to allow for backyard hens at its 1:30 p.m., Feb. 7 workshop in council chambers, 5850 West Glendale Ave.
A change in the city’s zoning ordinance would allow for chickens to be raised on the property of single-family homes. Currently, chickens are allowed in six zoning districts in Glendale, primarily those that are agricultural, rural and large-lot.

The council will discuss the proposal and if there is no consensus to proceed with it, the issue dies. No public testimony will be taken at the workshop.
So far Mayor Jerry Weiers and Councilwoman Lauren Tolmachoff are on the record opposing a zoning amendment.
The Planning Commmission in December directed staff to proceed with the proposal and take into consideration factors such as yard size and number of chickens allowed. No roosters are allowed.
According to the city, the amendment if approved would not affect HOAs’ conditions, covenants and restrictions, contrary to what some residents have stated in previous meetings on the issue.
