I just returned from San Diego after visiting family for the Christmas holiday. I drove the six-hour trip as it’s a fairly easy drive with stops in Yuma, both directions, to fill up with a lot cheaper than California fuel.
Driving down “the 8” is the standard route for us and as I drive, I am frequently switching lanes to pass and every time I switch lanes, I encounter multiple rumbles of my tires rolling over countless “bumps” from the lane-change warnings.
I also am greeted by loud buzzing rumbles if my vehicles fades to the right as I cross near the right shoulder. Both of these lane-change warnings might be a viable option to incorporate into the painted bike lane lines on the streets.
While you may never stop driver distractions, especially cell phones, these two options may help protect bicyclists in the bike lanes by providing a warning to distracted drivers.
I know for myself, I would rarely, if ever, ride the street bike lanes.
