Copple: Now’s time to end America's foreign oil dependence

Watching TV and seeing the horrific genocide Putin is attempting in Ukraine makes me angry, sad, you name it.

However, some of that anger is at our nation’s failure to address the threat of climate change. And most of that inaction is caused by one party.

That party is partly subsidized by Big Oil. Even today in the ongoing crisis, which is directly caused by Putin and some Russian oligarchs and their fossil fuel wealth, they still back Russia.

In the 1980s after our embassy in Iran was overrun and personnel killed, when Reagan became president, he took no action to eliminate our dependence on Middle East oil. He could have asked us to sacrifice, raise the gas tax and use that money for alternative energies. George W. Bush had a similar opportunity after 911, but he asked that we go shopping.

Now we have another opportunity to sacrifice, Big Oil to join with us and our government to implement a World War II-style program to accelerate building wind turbines, heat pumps and solar. As well as extend tax credits for installation.

The time is now!
