House Republicans have passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” budget legislation demanded by President Trump that would deliver massive, permanent tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations – while slashing Medicaid and SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food assistance that millions of Americans rely on every day.
According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this bill will benefit the top 10% of earners and penalize the bottom 10% of earners. In other words, robbing the poor to pay the rich.
The proposed cuts total more than $1 trillion and would:
*Take away healthcare from millions, like low-income hardworking families, children and seniors.
*Put food out of reach for struggling families.
*Drive more people into poverty.
*Raise costs for students, workers and seniors.
*Add at least $3.7 trillion to the national debt.
*Lead to likely future cuts to Social Security and Medicare due to the Congressional Rules that mandate specific budget cuts that are triggered by unfunded tax cuts.
All this suffering, by the most vulnerable members of our society, would be incurred simply to balance out the debt created by giving huge handouts to the rich. While the ultra-rich don’t really need more handouts, millions of Americans do need healthcare, food assistance and Social Security.
Senate Republicans are still divided on their support for the plan. Although it is uncertain as to what will eventually be adopted, you can make your voice heard now by calling your congressional representative, and our two senators, and demand that they vote no on any final budget proposal that cuts Medicaid, SNAP, K-12 education and other essential programs.
