Parker Jackson from the Goldwater Institute published an opinion describing a lawsuit Goldwater filed on behalf of state taxpayers regarding a $125 million yearly subsidy to the film industry. Good. Subsidies like this need accountability and prove their value to Arizona taxpayers. Unfortunately, the Goldwater Institute likes to pick and choose which taxpayer rip-offs they go after.
As a reminder, they are the original architects of the school voucher program the state has in place. You recall the one that lets parents buy a piano, take ski lessons, enroll in a martial arts program and other creative uses like “ghost” students to defraud the program at taxpayer expense? There’s little accountability whether a parent’s use of our taxpayer dollars qualifies for the program and Goldwater resists any meaningful reforms.
Our state Superintendent of Education has admitted they don’t have the staff to audit expenditures as they occur and we have a budget crisis as a result. Why isn’t the Goldwater Institute going after this abuse of taxpayer dollars.
