A 42-year-old man died Wednesday after the gas-powered scooter he was operating crashed head-on into a vehicle on North Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, police said.
The collision happened about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 16 near Cave Creek Road and Cheryl Drive. Officers arrived to find Gary Helton on the ground with serious injuries. He died at the scene.
Detectives stated in a release that preliminary information suggests Helton and the passenger vehicle were driving on the left-hand-turn-only lane toward each other until they collided. Authorities evaluated the driver of the vehicle and determined impairment was involved in the crash.
