Coleman of Apache Junction receives Good Scout Award

Posted

The Grand Canyon Council, an independent nonprofit organization chartered by the Boy Scouts of America, recently hosted a ceremonial breakfast to honor Apache Junction resident Doug Coleman with the Good Scout Award.

The award is presented to those who exemplify the ideals of Scouting. The recipients are selected for their outstanding community service and leadership to many worthwhile organizations, as well as the respect and esteem in which they are held by their colleagues, according to a release.

Coleman was selected for the Good Scout Award due to his continued leadership and dedication to Arizona Scouting and the greater community. He lives Scout principles that are highlighted in the longstanding Scout Oath and Law every day, including leading with courtesy, kindness and bravery, and he continues to volunteer to help others, it states.

Coleman is retired and recently served as Justice of the Peace for Pinal County Precinct No. 6. He also represented District 16 as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives for six years and previously served as the mayor of Apache Junction from 1995 to 2007.

An Arizona native, Coleman has a long history of volunteering in areas related to education and economic independence and has held multiple volunteer positions for the Grand Canyon Council.

The Good Scout Event held on Oct. 19 raised more than $51,000 from sponsors and donors. The donations will assist Grand Canyon Council’s mission to help young people reach their full potential through leadership team development days, property improvements and Scout programing.

Mark Killian, owner of the Killian Co., was the event chair; and other business and community leaders from the East Valley were in attendance, the release states.

Scouts BSA is available to boys and girls ages 5-20 and helps develop leadership and important life skills. For information about the Grand Canyon Council, go to grandcanyonbsa.org.
