Clinging to life: West Valley police officer makes career out of saving those in crisis

Last month, Peoria Police Detective Frank Contreras was on his way home from work and a call for service came over that a woman was on the Grand Avenue overpass above southbound Loop 101 threatening to end her life as cars sped by below.

As it happened, Contreras was already in the area. Without thinking, he immediately headed to the overpass where he found the woman, in her 20s, clutched to the fence with her back to the freeway, intending to let loose at any moment.

Contreras would later learn she was experiencing a crisis in her life, as her mother had just had surgery. He said the woman was feeling misunderstood and alone and did not have anyone close to confide in.
