Clifford, better known as Coach, sustained a bad fall at church on December 9, 2018 and subsequently passed away in his sleep on January 5, 2019. He was 86 years old.Coach was born on October 31, 1932 - Halloween Day - in Culver City, CA and was the youngest of four children. His family relocated to the Seattle area during World War II where he ultimately attended Lincoln High School and later received both his Bachelor's and Master's Degree from the University of Washington.During his college years he joined the Air Force ROTC and later achieved the rank of Captain and served as a Navigator on the Boeing KC-97 refueling tanker. He married Shirley Lothe on August 24, 1957 and they spent 57 years together raising their two children, Colleen and Scott, in their home in Shoreline, WA.After leaving the Air Force and transitioning to civilian life he took a job with the Seattle School District where he first taught at Hamilton Jr. High and then transferred to Nathan Hale High School when it opened in 1963. While his profession was teaching, his true calling was coaching which would become a large part of his identity for 50+ years. He coached Cross Country, Track, Swimming and Soccer and won numerous State and Metro Championships. In 2009 he and Shirley purchased a winter home in Sun City West, AZ which would become their year-round residence five years later. While he vowed he would no longer decorate for Christmas in Arizona like he had when he was in Washington, the warmer weather and encouraging community were too much to resist. His Christmas Display on Alta Loma Drive became increasingly popular each year and largely defined who he was and what he did in Sun City West. He is survived by his sister, Norma Skinner, and his son, Scott Hogle. A Celebration of Life event has been scheduled for Saturday, August 24th at 1:00 P.M. at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, WA. Anyone who would like more information about the Celebration of Life event can send an email to coachhogle@cox.net.
