The Citizens Clean Elections Commission, the nonpartisan group responsible for funding various political candidates, is launching a “Beyond the Ballot AZ” podcast to get more people interested in how history and today’s world are impacted by civics.
The 15-minute podcasts focus on a historical civic moment in the state and its current impact.
“We aim to dive into civics stories in a way that will give listeners content that is interesting and useful,” said Gina Roberts, Clean Elections voter education director and “Beyond the Ballot AZ” co-host, in a press release. “We hope that every episode inspires our audience to want to learn more about how the government works, as well as practical ways to get involved.”

The first episode, available May 1, focuses on the life and legacy of late Congressman Raul Grijalva with special guest Tom Volgy, the former mayor of Tucson and current professor at the University of Arizona.
“There is no doubt that Arizona’s civic history is filled with enough big personalities, dynamic social movements and political events to fill our first season,” said Tom Collins, Clean Elections executive director and “Beyond the Ballot AZ” podcast co-host, in a press release. “We intend to focus on topics that are timely and that are appealing to everyday Arizonans.”
“Beyond the Ballot AZ” episodes will be released twice a month and are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other major podcast platforms. For the complete list of platforms, visit the Clean Elections website.
