Classroom diversity: 14% of public school students have learning disability

Students receiving special education face diversity in their schooling environments every day.

There is a wide variety of learning disabilities that qualify a student for special education, and nearly 7 million public school students in the United States have a learning disability, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

In most cases, classmates are not aware of a peer’s disability, as not all disabilities are visible. Michael Sabato, currently a student at Scottsdale Community College, was diagnosed with dyslexia, a virtually invisible disability, in the first grade.
