Civitan Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through various programs and employment services, will distribute meals to children in need at two Arizona locations this summer as part of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
Meals served in the Phoenix area will be prepared by participants of Civitan’s ‘Cook-er-y,’ a culinary program at Civitan Village which is fully comprised of chefs with developmental disabilities. The organization is also providing meals to four closed Summer Food sites.
“There are many more locations handing out food through SFSP, but our locations are especially unique because two at risk groups, the special needs community and underserved youth, are truly serving one other,” said Kevin Gregg, the Cook-er-y’s Culinary Director. “Thousands of youth need food during these challenging times, and our differently-abled members need job support. It’s a perfect match.”
The SFSP is a federally funded program administered by the Arizona Department of Education Health and Nutrition Services Division that provides free and healthy meals to youth in Arizona all summer long.
Meals will be provided to all eligible children, ages 18 and under, free of charge. To be eligible to receive free meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program.
Children who are part of households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or Temporary Assistance to Need Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to receive free meals
