City officials fire back at Legislature’s attempts to end charter status

A new political effort is afoot seeking to ask Arizona voters to constitutionally remove the authority of a municipality from forming as a charter city.

Local officials say Senate Concurrent Resolution 1023, which is being debated by Arizona lawmakers this session, will have vast impacts to Arizona’s charter cities.

As originally written, SCR 1023 would have applied to 19 charter cities, which includes some of the largest municipalities in the state. Flagstaff, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria, Chandler, Goodyear, Avondale, Prescott and Tucson are all among charter cities in Arizona.
