The city of Mesa paid out more than $5 million on 509 claims and out-of-court settlements during the past five years, according to a review of its records.
The highest two are $600,000 paid out in 2016 from a police shooting and $500,000 in 2019 from when a city-owned administration department vehicle hit a vehicle. The lowest two — both claims against the solid-waste department — were for $25.36 in miscellaneous property damage in 2018 and $18 for a city vehicle hitting an object in 2017.
A public records request was made Feb. 22 through a dedicated city of Mesa web portal seeking a five-year examination of out-of-court settlements and claims including when it was filed, when the settlement was made, the settlement amount, claimant, description of loss or claim and the department.
