MESA PROPERTY TAXES

City of Mesa owes $2M, MPS owes $11M in property taxes due to Qasimyar lawsuit

The city of Mesa owes $2,049,213 in property tax repayments to residents and the Mesa Unified School District owes $11,203,795 due to the Qasimyar-Maricopa lawsuit, according to reports from the city.

The Qasimyar v. Maricopa County lawsuit alleged that the county incorrectly taxed properties that had a change in use from a primary residence to a non-primary residence or vice-versa from 2015 to 2021. The lawsuit originated in 2016.

In 2021 the Arizona Court of Appeals had upheld a decision supporting Ahmad Zaky Qasimyar’s claim against the county, meaning affected homeowners will receive a refund check in the mail for each of the seven years plus interest accrued.
