City council says more arts funding needed in west Phoenix

Phoenix City Council members advocated last week for public art investments throughout the city, particularly in west Phoenix.

“Our support for the arts should not be reserved for our downtown or Central City. All Phoenix communities should be access to experience and appreciate the arts,” said Councilwoman Betty Guardado during the Friday, July 1, council meeting.

Guardado was the only council member who, because of that lack of equity in arts investment, voted against city staff’s recommendations for public arts grant funding for the new fiscal year, which began on July 1. On an 8-1 vote, the council approved $1.2 million that will be given to 98 different arts organizations in the city.
