Cinco de Mayo has a storied history — one that seems to be popular among residents in the Southwest.

And no, the first celebration didn’t start out with people wanting to try excellent Mexican beer.

Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 — led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. It is said the victory over the French army was a morale boost for the Mexicans.
