Child in critical condition after being hit by Phoenix police cruiser

Posted

A child is in critical condition after being hit Wednesday evening by a Phoenix Police Department cruiser, authorities said.

The collision occurred just before 6 p.m. June 7, near 11th Avenue and Pima Street as an officer and police assistant were traveling a Chevrolet Tahoe northbound on 11th Avenue.

They had just completed a call when they saw a young girl waving  at them in the front yard of a home, police said. As the officers were waving at the girl they saw another child in the road and the collision occurred.

Police did not release the age or gender of the child who was hit.

"We are all heartbroken that such a young child was involved in an accicent that has caused serious injuries," Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said Wednesday night.

"Everybody's affected, both officers and family with such a horrific situation that we encountered today."
