Charting an uneven path: Scottsdale sidewalks draw criticism

While the hustle and bustle of Scottsdale’s popular downtown corridor can be inviting, its accessibility to patrons living with a disability can be questionable.

Some sidewalks are in need of repair, while other areas may be out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In its simplest form, a contiguous sidewalk offers pedestrians a safe option to get from point A to point B. But when mixed together with historic properties, private land ownership and other factors, some point to uneven, unsafe paths of travel.

Specifically, near the intersection of Scottsdale and Camelback roads — where Scottsdale Fashion Square is on the northwest corner along with a bevy of other restaurants and businesses — resident and proprietor Bill Crawford points out a number of issues with the sidewalks. From a powerline protruding into the walkway to a sudden end of concrete, the condition is less than encouraging to traverse.
