In less than three decades, charter school options for Arizona families have grown significantly with more than 500 campuses throughout the state.
Charter school executives say Arizona’s “open enrollment” model, which gives students and parents the opportunity to attend any school of their choosing and are not limited to their neighborhood school, has bolstered the success of charter schools. Charter schools first began in Arizona in the mid-to-late 1990s, but really took off in the 2000s. 
Many within the educational landscape no longer believe one size fits all when it comes to learning, which has fostered competition between educational entities.
