Charles Santa Cruz cannot possibly pick a favorite memory in 48 years of public education. There are too many to count.

But there is one special piece that encapsulates all those memories: a ring Santa Cruz wears.

The ring is made of gold melted down from some trinkets his mother gave him when she died. He had been unsure what to do with them.
