Chandler students recognized for NICU efforts

A Chandler Unified School District student and about a dozen volunteer students were recognized at the CUSD governing board’s Oct 9 regular meeting for their work on a charity effort.

Karis Wales, now a ninth-grader at Arizona College Prep High School, started a nonprofit organization two years ago as a Basha Accelerated Middle School seventh-grader.

The organization, Knots for NICU (neonatal intensive care units), is a middle school club that meets weekly during the school year to crotchet, knit and sew hats, headbands, blankets and even burial gowns for premature babies, to be donated to Arizona hospitals.
