As Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne recently leaned in again to push for one of his 2024 legislative efforts, school districts around the state are reviewing what rules each one has in place regarding student cell phone and other personal device use on campus.
The Chandler Unified School District policy is to not have phones disrupt instruction, partly through a “Bring Your Own Technology” agreement the district has parents and students sign.
However, Horne appears to want the state legislature and Gov. Katie Hobbs to impose a much more sweeping ban on use of phones and other devices on campus. He held an Aug. 22 press conference on revisiting legislation to ban student cell phone use in classrooms across the state and at other times during the school day.
