Chandler school board member on literacy, math: aim higher

Not satisfied with 60% proficiency

Chandler Unified School District students and campus sites have made small progress or held their own in a number of assessment or other achievement categories, officials said at a Wednesday study session.

Not good enough, according to one CUSD board member.

Board member Kurt Rohrs called out staff for celebrating what he characterized as meeting low standards. He said realizing it has likely taken great effort by students, parents, teachers and other staff to improve or maintain certain levels of proficiency throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s not nearly enough, since thousands of CUSD students are still not considered proficient in literacy or math.
